WHAT KIND of EXPERIENCE  YOU are LOOKING for?

While researching sailing operators - keep always in mind - that in order to make BEST decision - the price tag shall not be your main indicator - as the saying says -  “you get what you paid for” in the end . 

Make sure you are not fooled with PERFECT catalogue pictures and shiny marketing materials - as they may be further from reality than you could imagine.  Ask for real images ;-)

Don’t be fooled that advertising the NEWEST boat (was it the newest when the website was made, when ? ) is  therefore BEST - as the age of the sailing vessel and your charter  experience, has nothing to do with you final satisfaction. 

You can have the best time of your life on a classic boat from 1940s - as long as the vessel is taken care of and CLEAN - by devoted and passionate owner. 

Some classic yachts  are like WINE especially if cared by a devoted owner  - and offer luxury experience on a comfortable   ELEGANT classy  vessel. Quality of most stadarized new “modern” vessels is far below the vessels that were made before 90s (in most cases - excluding of course world famous million dollar + yachts e.g. Oester etc). Why ? Cost effectiveness ….to cater to  middle class. And most owners know it - therefore they keep good boats - see % of value depreciation of new “modern” vessels to well known classics from 90s :-) - there is a reason why they keep the value and don’t loose 50% in first 5 yrs :)

Before,  the yachts of 40 feet plus were built with quality for the people who could afford it - and expecting highest quality - without cutting corners. Today casual market tempts with lower prices - compromising quality tremendously.

However in any service, and especially charter  - the most important factor is a   HUMAN factor  - as in the end you will remember  WHO you sailed with  . 

Was the captain/crew professional? courteous? entertaining? or your skipper was a “ driver" that wanted to have it done asap …and you had nothing to talk about …. Is he “young” and strong enough to fully perform and open sails ( yes - it is very much physically demanding job and need full attention) … . Did he open sails or was under motor only for his convenience ?

Miami has it all - just make your research and be careful with “product - placement’ articles, literally advertising one particular boat / location for the convenience of the author = that boat owner :-)

Please do not be fooled by ads of free professional photography is included - as of what we know - nobody will offer you truly professional services for free ( if they are really good) as such services require 2 assistants to hold reflectors and modifiers (screens) to create/control light, more sophisitcated equipment ( not just DSLR/s NIKON or CANON that almost every body has nowadays) That does not make you a professional …. There is much more to that. We love photography but we don’t call ourselves pros just because we have a DSLR Nikon or Canon (nowadays everybody calls themselves pro :-)

For truly professional services - you may hire photographer and invite him aboard. Research well, as most “prof” in Miami may be a person with DSLR and silly skills behind 

Good Photography is an ART for which you need a good eye and tech skills (science) as well.

Timing - Most sailors know that even a full day is not enough to enjoy true sailing trip - but due to time - half day ( 4 hrs ) is our most popular charter .

We don’t recommend anything shorter than 4 hrs - as honestly 2 h ride ( offered by many older retired captains) means  leaving marina - motor and back in slip. 

Each marina (in Miami) = no exceptions , have access channel that can be 10-20 -30 min long - before you can open sail, based on wind direction of course  - so calculating entry and docking part - you know your answer what 2 hrs on sailboat is a ride from any location.

For some captains - due to their age - it is more convenient - as it is the easiest trip and does not even require opening sails …. just motoring … and for them least effort and most money earned by doing 2-4 a day short riders under motor.

For sure this is not BEST value you were hoping for ...

Norwegian Luna Revealed, Sailing from Miami in 2026

• September 18, 2024

Norwegian Cruise Line today unveiled and opened for sale the next evolution of its Prima Plus Class, the all-new Norwegian Luna, according to a press release.

The new ship will sail from Miami beginning April 4, 2026 through November 2026. The Norwegian Luna will kick off its inaugural Caribbean season with two western itineraries to Roatan Island, Honduras; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; and Harvest Caye, Belize.

The ship will then sail seven-day cruises with calls to the beautiful Eastern Caribbean destinations of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas, which will feature a brand-new pier by late 2025.

At 1,056 feet long, 156,300 gross tons, and accommodating approximately 3,550 guests at double occupancy, the Norwegian Luna will boast an overall 10 percent size and capacity increase from Prima Class ships, and will be built at Fincantieri.

The company said the Norwegian Luna’s hull art will showcase a vibrant dreamscape by ELLE, the highly acclaimed street artist from Napa, Calif., who has partnered with popular brand names such as Nike, Reebok and Ralph Lauren. Entitled ‘La Luna,’ the artwork is a visual exploration of humanity’s deep-rooted connection with the celestial forces in space as human beings are intrinsically linked to the ebb and flow of the moon. ‘La Luna’ will display proudly on the bow of the ship, leading guests on an extraordinary voyage and an epic journey of discovery.

Crew members of failed Miami Beach water taxi say they’re owed money. Where is the owner?

Days after the city of Miami Beach terminated a deal for a water taxi service across Biscayne Bay, the boat’s crew members say they haven’t been paid for all of their work and are being stonewalled by the company.

Four workers who helped operate the Poseidon Ferry told the Miami Herald they weren’t paid for any work they did in August, despite the ferry receiving a taxpayer subsidy that its owner said would allow the service between South Beach and downtown Miami to become financially viable.

“It’s a hit that I really cannot take,” said Javier Martinez, a deckhand who says he is owed more than $1,400 for 89 hours of work last month. “This was the last thing I thought was going to happen.”

Martinez, 55, said he has tried contacting the ferry’s owners to no avail. He shared screenshots of messages he sent to Johnathan Silvia, the CEO of Poseidon Ferry LLC, that have not been returned.

“We got ghosted by everybody,” Martinez said. “You’ve got to pay your people.”

David Guthrie, who worked as a captain for Poseidon, said he has been speaking with other employees and believes at least 10 people are owed money.

Guthrie said he is owed for four days of work after he was paid for July and only worked a few days in August. But he said another captain is owed more than $6,000.

“They haven’t paid anyone for the entire month of August,” Guthrie said, adding that those affected include mates and crew members who had no other source of income.

Silvia did not respond to phone calls and messages seeking comment Monday.

Ralph Andrade, a lobbyist for Poseidon, said he wasn’t aware of the employees’ concerns but would seek more information.

In a brief statement, Miami Beach spokesperson Melissa Berthier said the city was aware of the situation and “evaluating our options.”

The ferry was plagued by maintenance problems and low ridership that led the City Commission to nix a one-year, $50,000-per-month pilot program last week, just three months after it had green-lit the program.

The city has already paid Poseidon for its operations in late June and July, Berthier said — about $42,000, prorated to account for service interruptions — but has yet to pay the company about $24,000 for August.

Under their agreement , the city has 45 days to make payments to Poseidon after receiving an invoice from the company at the end of each month. Berthier declined to comment on whether the city could seek to withhold some or all of the August payment based on the stops in service that constituted a breach of the agreement.

Markus Benson, who worked for Poseidon as a first mate on weekends, said he’s owed over $600.

Benson, 21, said employees were initially told they would be paid every two weeks, but the pay schedule shifted to become monthly. Like others, Benson said he hasn’t heard from the owners in weeks.

“I’ve waited and now I’m finally ready to take some action on it,” he said.

Questions about Poseidon’s ability to pay its workers first came up in July, workers said.

Late that month, one of the boat’s captains messaged employees to say the company’s owner had applied for “three different capital loans” and was hoping to pay workers before the city made its July payment sometime in early August. The captain added that the owner was urging the city to make payments to Poseidon on the first of each month.

“I know we all are questioning when is pay day!!” the captain wrote, according to a screenshot of the message. She expressed confidence that everyone would be paid. “I wouldn’t be here working myself if I truly didn’t believe that.”

Employees told the Herald they were ultimately paid for their work in July about two weeks into August.

Hourly departures between Maurice Gibb Memorial Park in Sunset Harbour and Sea Isle Marina in Miami began June 30 but were quickly interrupted because of mechanical issues on July 4 and July 6. Additional mechanical failures led to five straight days without service from July 10 to July 14, followed by two more days of partial service.

The 149-person vessel broke down again from Aug. 7-9. The next day, Poseidon resumed service as its owner struck a deal to use a different boat. But 10 days after that, on Aug. 20, service was suspended indefinitely because the spare boat was no longer available.

Guthrie, the captain, said the Poseidon Ferry was in bad shape when operations began.

“The boat was pretty much dying when we started this,” he said. “Everything was breaking down.”

On days that the water taxi was operational, an average of 43 people boarded it, according to data from the city. The ferry experienced “persistent air conditioning breakdowns” and customer complaints about “the cleanliness and appearance of the vessel,” city officials said.

The ferry had previously operated without public funding in 2020 but stalled because of low ridership. It relaunched in August 2021 , then was shuttered again in late 2022.

Miami Beach officials pushed for Poseidon to return with taxpayer help, touting ferry service as one way to address the city’s traffic gridlock .

But Poseidon had faced financial woes and lawsuits for years. The company lost about $500,000 in 2022, a representative said last year. In November, the IRS filed a lien notice that said the company owed almost $114,000 in federal taxes. And in January, the company was sued in Miami-Dade County Court by the Community Fund of North Miami Dade, which claimed Poseidon owed more than $21,000 after failing to repay a loan.

The company also faced a November 2022 federal lawsuit in which a yacht owner claimed a Poseidon Ferry captain “lost control” of the boat while traveling along the Miami River that July, hitting the docked yacht and causing over $44,000 in damage. The case was settled last November.

Martinez, the deckhand, said he is now scrambling to find work. While he hopes to be made whole for his work for Poseidon, he said, his expectations are low.

“I don’t see us getting our money,” he said. “We were working. We didn’t get paid. That’s it.”
