inverness yacht club sailing camp

Business name : Inverness Yacht Club

This site is designed to serve the members of the Inverness Yacht Club and provides a place where members can have handy access to the Race Schedule, the Social Calendar and other useful information pertaining to activities at the IYC.  Non members are also welcome to browse the site to learn more about our club.  So, if you’re interested in learning about us,  please come as our guest to an Open House any second Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 and introduce yourself.  You’ll meet a lot of friendly folks and probably see several people you already know!

The Inverness Yacht Club, on Tomales Bay, was founded in 1912 for the purpose of preserving Tomales Bay, fostering boating and yachting and to serve as a base for adult and youth activities in the community, both on and off the water. The Inverness Yacht Club is an all volunteer organization, relying on its members to assist in keeping the club operational. Volunteer service includes every aspect of the Club – tending the facility itself and shepherding it’s social events, involvement in the Racing program as well as the Adult Boating and Youth Sailing programs, contributing to a monthly newsletter (The Pilot), pitching in on work days, helping with our Ships’ Store which sells clothing and related items, and meeting the many other needs of the organization. Every member is expected to participate in some way. The membership is made up of permanent and part-time residents of West Marin, as well as families and individuals who don’t mind the lovely drive to spend time at the Club. Activities include sailing, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, fishing and just messing around in boats.

“On Tomales Bay we don’t have the same Coast Guard restrictions as on San Francisco Bay, but we do have to comply with Marin County requirements,”  InvYC Race Chair Michael Sporer said. “This was our first club-sponsored event for the year under COVID-19 restrictions.”

inverness yacht club sailing camp

One of the requirements is that boats need to be crewed solo unless the crew is from the same household. “Fortunately my children crew for me so sailing solo wasn’t a barrier, although several skippers have indicated they will wait for the solo restriction to be lifted in order to take their boat out.”

Naomi Sporer all smiles on the trapeze.

Saturday’s 13-boat fleet was a mixed class and included eight 110 sailboats — six of which sailed singlehanded, while the remaining two were crewed by families.

Open Class and solo sailing

Michael says it took “a lot of effort” to resume the club’s race schedule. Approval for Saturday’s first regatta came just in the nick of time, on June 17. And the “effort,” while clearly worthwhile for racers, also resulted in approval for the InvYC’s 2020 Youth Sailing Camp.

Most years, the club’s organized events include 13 races known as the Bender Series, the annual Hog Island ‘Long Distance’ Invitational Race, district championships for a variety of classes, and the occasional national regatta.

“We sail both Open Class with Portsmouth, and an International 110 One Design,” Michael added.

No doubt Michael’s thoughts about his first day back into racing are being echoed by sailors all across the region.

“It was great for me to get out on the water.”

As it stands right now, due to the COVID regulations, only club members can participate in organized events. Anyone interested in joining Inverness Yacht Club or learning about the club’s racing program can find information on the website at https://invernessyachtclub.com/about .

Has your club’s racing season resumed ? What did you have to go through to make this happen?

Inverness Marina

inverness yacht club sailing camp

Inverness Marina, NMU Small Coastal Marina of the Year 2018, lies seven miles south west of Chanonry Point in the Inverness Firth and just one mile from the city centre of Inverness. The marina sits close to the eastern entrance of the Caledonian Canal, making it an ideal location for yachts to be based with easy access to both the Scottish north east coast and via the canal to the popular Scottish west coast.

Scotland’s east coast is home to a population of around 200 bottlenose dolphins, their range centred around the inner Moray Firth, where a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) has been designated for their protection. The waters around Inverness contain important habitat for these dolphins and provide one of the best watching opportunities in the world.

In addition to delivering 150 berths in the heart of the Moray Firth, Inverness Marina boasts new shoreside facilities. As well as housing the marina office, the new marina building provides a laundry and spacious shower and toilet facilities for berth holders and visiting boat crews. There is also a classroom/crewroom area available. The marina has a 75T marine travel hoist and crane for masting.

Inverness Marina is proud to be part of The Yacht Harbour Association’s Gold Anchor Award Scheme and is rated at Four Gold Anchors. This means that Inverness Marina reach the international standards set for marinas, offer excellent facilities, a very high level of service and has achieved the ICOMIA Clean Marina standard.

Inverness Airport is only 15 minutes away by bus or taxi and the railway station is only 1 mile from the marina. Inverness is a modern city where there are many fine restaurants and shops to be found.

A warm welcome is assured at Inverness Marina.
