VR Sports Powerboat Racing Review

Arcade racing fans looking for a change of pace may very well be intrigued by VR Sports' new Powerboat Racing. Unfortunately, the game suffers from so many flaws that it barely stays afloat.

Arcade racing fans looking for a change of pace may very well be intrigued by VR Sports' new Powerboat Racing. After all, most games in the racing genre plop you behind the wheel of a landlocked car while this game lets you take on a series of complex canal-like racecourses in a sleek, offshore racing watercraft. Unfortunately, the game suffers from so many flaws that it barely stays afloat.

Like any decent arcade racer, Powerboat Racing offers a variety of gameplay modes. Arcade mode is your basic run around the course against human or AI opponents, while championship mode offers a string of arcade runs that form a "season." Shootout is an elimination tournament in which the last place finisher is booted after every race (until only one racer remains), and challenge is a one-on-one, two-lap race. The game also offers practice, time trial, and slalom modes, each of which can help you learn the controls and the tracks - and believe me you'll need this practice time if you hope to do well in the game.

Powerboat Racing can be controlled with the keyboard, joystick, gamepad, or steering wheel. VR Sports recommends the steering wheel, and I would have to agree. Every other control option is pure lunacy. A gamepad, which is any sport and driving game fan's "old standby" controller, is far too sensitive for this game, and you'll be bashing your boat into the walls all too often if you use one. Joysticks are worse, as they are simply ill suited for controlling a boat and are often more sensitive than the gamepads. If you're one of the many gamers not yet fortunate enough to own a nice steering wheel rig, the keyboard is your best bet. But even the keyboard is a royal pain, as the steering is extremely sensitive. Oversteering is common, and that leads to overcorrecting, and so on, and so on.

Worse yet, these controls are not configurable. You can't adjust the sensitivity and you can't modify the functions assigned to any buttons or keys. This was just plain irksome, especially for those gamers (like me) who prefer the "push a button to accelerate" method over the game's default "push forward to accelerate, push left and right to steer" control setup.

As if the controls themselves weren't difficult enough to master, the game also throws a series of extremely challenging courses in your face. Considered in a vacuum, the complex courses in Powerboat Racing would be a plus - we all appreciate a challenging game, after all. In fact, many of the courses have shortcuts, mobile obstacles, and other objects (like larger boats and multiple jumps) that really liven up the action. But if you're not yet an absolute master of the game's heinous controls, the courses will only prove incredibly difficult and frustrating.

On top of this, you'll find that the game's AI is very good - too good, in fact. Unlike MicroProse's Ultim@te Race Pro, which offers a great range of AI skill levels, Powerboat Racing starts off at hard and gets progressively harder. In most cases, the AI boats all leap off the starting line and leave you in the dust. In a normal game, this wouldn't be a problem as you could gradually work your way back to the front of the pack. In Powerboat Racing, however, falling behind early means that you have little chance of seeing those other boats again (until they lap you, that is).

The game's graphics engine is decent, but not nearly as good as it thinks it is. Despite some impressive effects for water transparency and surface reflection, the graphics in Powerboat Racing are decidedly average. The rise and fall of the water is pretty weak when compared with a game like Psygnosis' Shipwreckers, for example. The 3D "weather" seems to be limited to intense fog effects, which in turn seem to be used to hide the less-than-stellar landscapes surrounding each course. Also, the boats throw cheesy splash bitmaps when they turn - a far cry from some of the cooler 3D rain and water effects we've seen in games like Ubisoft's F1 Racing Simulation and others.

The game has a number of other annoying flaws, including the archaic name-entry system that you must go through before each and every race: Names are limited to three characters and are entered using a scrolling, arcade-style alphabet. Hey, this is a $2,000 PC guys - it has a keyboard and it can handle names with four, five, even (gasp!) six characters at times.

Powerboat Racing supports IPX for multiplayer races and allows up to six players to participate. You can also have four players racing on the same PC, using a split-screen mode. This might be fun for those gamers with four daisy-chained gamepads, but only if they have a huge monitor.

But first you have to find three other people willing to suffer through this game's poor controls and uninspiring gameplay. If you really need your water-racing fix, you'd be better off with the hybrid Jet Ski thrills of Jet Moto. Otherwise, stick to one of the upper-tier car-racing games and just imagine it taking place at sea... at least until a better boat racer comes along.

10 best arcade-style racing games

The age of the arcade-style racing games has certainly passed, with some of the best being left in the smoke. However, that doesn’t mean a lot of them aren’t worth visiting again. There are even some gems still being produced.

Arcade-style games need something more than their sim racing-style counterparts. For me, the core of it is handling. Cars need to be able to be thrown around corners at speeds beyond comprehension while burning rubber in a sideways slide. Nitrous needs to be in abundance, and crashes have to be completely unrealistic. A few other extras I like to see are a killer soundtrack, police chases, and of course, obscene car customization.

This whole series ran from 2001 to 2018 and created a one-of-a-kind style of arcade racer that has never quite been matched. What made the Burnout series stand out was its focus on carnage and destruction over technical mastery. The high-speed, car tagging, adrenaline-fest was best in class for arcade-style racing games for the longest time.

However, the company that owns Burnout, Criterion Games, got bought by EA and swallowed into the pit of corporate waste. EA put a stop to the production of the Burnout games just after their first foray into the open world. Burnout: Paradise was a great first try at something new and promised great things. Alas, it may be the last we got.

As far as arcade-style racing games go, it doesn’t get much more high speed and breakneck than the Wipeout series. This collection of games began during a time when the future of 3D gaming wasn’t just exciting; it was completely unknown.

The Wipeout games were designed with the bright lights, high speeds, and pumping techno of nightclubs. The games themselves were originally intended to be played in a lot of the raves that occurred around the UK at the time. This gives reason for the original design of the name having the capital E right in the middle. However, the game moved from the clubs to the home and ran from 1995 up until 2012.

Need For Speed

Games with opening theme songs can often ruin the track for me forever. Burnout: Paradise did it with Paradise City by Guns N Roses, but Need For Speed: Underground somehow never managed it. I will still listen to Lil John and The Eastside Boys – Get Low on the regular. The tune just slaps.

The Need For Speed series , with Underground 2 being my personal highlight, is a phenomena. The slick-looking streets, unbelievable customization, and killer soundtrack are all held together by some of the best driving controls of the time. Games like Forza Motorsport, in my humble opinion, aren’t ever going to be arcade-style racing games because they don’t feel arcady. The Need For Speed games have that forgiving, blisteringly fast, nitrous-injected handling that needs to be there for arcade-style racing games.

Ridge Racer

The Ridge Racer games spanned over 20 years, starting in 1993 and being platformed on everything from arcade boxes to Android phones. The reason these arcade-style racers have managed to stand the test of time is that they have stuck to their formula.

Arcade-style racing needs a few things to work. They need flashy street racing cars, some wicked tracks in crazy locations, and those wonderful arcade-style controls. Ridge Racer lets you fly through city streets or mountain passes at far more than 100 miles an hour. Drift and slide are used liberally, and nitrous oxide is a given. Everything is a caricature in a good arcade-style racing game, and Ridge Racer kills it.

Midnight Club

Back when Midnight Club Street Racing came out in 2000 on PlayStation 2, it was one of those titles that changed the game but never got the recognition it deserved. Racing through midnight dark city streets, following checkpoints rather than closed courses, was a new thing in racing games, and Midnight Club did it so well.

By the time Midnight Club 3 came out, Rockstar had nailed their USP. These games took the arcade-style racing game to the extreme. It was possible to not only weave through traffic at more than 200 mph, could also boost, jump, and two-wheel your car. However, it didn’t stop there. There were also shields, force push, and other powers to unlock.

Midnight Club 3 had it all when it came to arcade-style racing games. The customization was fantastic, there was a great little career storyline, and the free roam even had collectibles to find.

Even today, you will most likely find one of the Mario Kart games tunefully sitting there in modern arcades. It is still a staple in a lot of alternative bars and can be found, in some form or another, in a lot of homes. The Mario Kart games are some of the most accessible arcade-style racing games on the market, and there are good reasons why.

These seminal games from Nintendo have controls that can be picked up in minutes, even by the most gaming-averse people. The friendly graphics and fun sounds draw folks in due to their attractive and welcoming vibes. The gameplay looks simple until you sit down with a pro and get taken to the streets. Mario Kart is the arcade racing game for everyone, loved by all, and mastered by few.

Forza Horizon

Forza games are generally made for racing enthusiasts. The Forza Motorsport games are impeccably made and provide some of the most realistic racing experiences in the gaming industry. Their dedication to realism should be praised. However, these are not arcade-style racing games by any stretch of the imagination.

Forza, realizing they weren’t capitalizing on the huge arcade driving market, introduced the Horizon games. These take themselves a lot less seriously, but still a lot more so than our previously mentioned titles. The Horizon games let you customize your cars, compete in races, and tear up the open world like any good arcade-style racing game, but they bring their own flavor. Forza Horizon injects a little of their precision and sensibility into their games, still expecting you to use the brake here and there, and restricting your boost to the point where it must be hard-earned. These are the perfect middle ground between racing sim and arcade gamers.

Whenever I enter an arcade, and they still have an original Crazy Taxi setup, I know where I am probably spending most of my time. This, along with some of the other titles in this list, broke free from the shackles of the arcades and into our homes. The original arcade machine had a wheel and pedals, but it translated well to the controller.

Crazy Taxi was dripping in style and character with its unique characters and their wildly different cars. Screaming around the city streets, collecting fares, and jumping highways, was wild fun. The clock was always just too short, but once you get the game cracked, it’s a blast. Rumour has it that there is a new Crazy Taxi on the way. However, whether they will capture the arcade-style glory of the original is yet to be seen.

Sometimes games slip under the radar, and it’s a terrible shame. I feel Wreckfest never really got the recognition it deserves, especially for how unique it is in the arcade-style racing game genre. Wreckfest brings mayhem, customization, and a pretty good soundtrack to a genre that has far too few similar modern games under its belt.

Wreckfest puts you in the driving seat of a stock car, driving and smashing your way to fame. As a kid, I used to watch stock car racing, so it has a place close to my heart. However, even if you’re not a fan of the sport, the game offers a whole lot of fun. It is beautifully designed and has some unbelievable crumple engines at work on the vehicles. This gives the action a bone-crunching realism that is so lifelike it almost pushes the game out of the arcade genre and into the sim one.

Twisted Metal

This is a game that I never expected to have a TV show made, and I don’t think it did, either. Twisted Metal was the most violent driving game of its time back in 1995, and it continued with its many releases up until 2012.

Akin to Wreckfest, you’re in an arena, and you want to be the last vehicle standing. However, Twisted Metal doesn’t take itself quite so seriously. So, everything from busses to the infamous Sweet Tooth Ice Cream Truck can be driven. Every car has its own specs, but they also come armed with weapons. Car-mounted guns, rockets, and flame throwers turn Twisted Metal from a racing game to a third-person shooter.

Best Kart Racing Games For PC

The Kart Racing genre is synonymous with action-packed races, fun with friends, and eternal frustration when getting hit with an overpowered item on the final lap. The Mario Kart series has, of course, been a frontrunner in the genre for multiple decades, with Crash Bandicoot ' s racing ventures trailing behind in second place.

Unfortunately for PC gamers, there are currently no Mario or Crash Bandicoot kart racing games available, leaving behind an unfortunate void. Although PC gaming doesn't offer the kart racing genre's top titles, there are plenty of other games available that will offer fast and frantic fun with friends.

Over time, developers both large and small have tried and will continue to try and fill the void. KartRider: Drift, for example, has been a big deal in South Korea for many years and has recently reached the rest of the world with a PC release on Steam. With constant updates from a dedicated team, this promises to be one of the best kart racing games on PC.

It seems that GameMill Entertainment, the game's publisher, is a fan of Nintendo's spin-off games , as the company has recently released Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl , which has many similarities to the Super Smash Bros . series.

Garfield Kart - Furious Racing

There have been many games released in the last few decades that have taken a recognizable character or IP and implemented it into an underwhelming kart racer. Unsurprisingly, many people thought that Garfield Kart - Furious Racing would have a similar fate when it was first announced.

However, the game's development team, Artefacts Studio, did a solid job with Garfield Kart , creating a thoroughly enjoyable kart racer for fans of the show or kart racing genre. Garfield Kart - Furious Racing may not offer many innovations to the genre , and its roster of just eight characters is fairly lackluster, though the game is still a decent kart racing option.

F1 Race Stars

F1 Race Stars was developed by Codemasters and offers a kart racing alternative to their realistic, simulation-style Formula One games.

Despite the spin-off theme, F1 Race Stars features official licensing, with real racer names and teams from the 2012 F1 season. Furthermore, the tracks are loosely based on real circuits but with quintessential kart racing elements included, such as shortcuts and ramps for jumps.

Wacky Wheels

To add some variety, Wacky Wheels is an excellent choice for those who enjoy the retro gameplay of the original Super Mario Kart. Wacky Wheels was released in October 1994 by Apogee Software, while the development was handled by Beavis Soft.

Instead of karts, players drive lawnmowers, while the characters are all zoo animals. Along with racing modes, the game also features a mode titled Wacky Shoot-Out, which is similar to the battle mode from the Mario Kart series. The 90s game was rereleased on GOG.com in 2014, making it easy to find today.

Super Indie Karts

It's not only older games that offer a callback to the retro style of racing games, as Super Indie Karts is a kart racer with a fantastic 16 to 64-bit style. The game was kickstarted in late 2014 and is still in Early Access as of October 2023, though One Legged Seagull is aiming to complete the game eventually.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed initially released in November 2012 and is a sequel to the aforementioned Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. The game includes a plethora of iconic SEGA characters like Sonic, AiAi from Super Monkey Ball , and Beat from Jet Set Radio . The Collection package is available on Steam and includes a handful of DLCs.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed received Metascores as high as 82 across the various systems on which it is available. It is widely considered to be one of the best kart racers available for PC players to enjoy.

KartRider: Drift

Released in early 2023 for PC, KartRider: Drift is a free-to-play online kart racing game with cross-platform capabilities. The game has two main modes, Speed Mode and Item Mode. Speed Mode is the ultimate test of skill, where players must rely on drifting and boosts, to come out on top.

Item Mode, on the other hand, is more similar to Mario Kart. Players take advantage of fun items to disrupt their opponents and enhance their own race. As players progress and complete more licenses, they will unlock increasingly more difficult and fun tracks in KartRider: Drift .

• This cart emblazoned button has many uses ranging from sharing pack offers and sales information to recommending packs you might be interested in. All accessible without leaving the comfort of your Sims’ homes.

• Critical fix for mod creators: Mods will sometimes invoke  TunableFactory at runtime after tuning load. This causes a None object exceptio*n since the expectation was everything happened during the initial tuning load, and it was not expected that dynamically creating tuning at runtime was a thing (outside of tuning reload, in which case we disable the optimization entirely if that is allowed). This change is to make *register_for_cleanup method do nothing after cleanup has already happened. If this is happening after tuning load, the created tunable factory and tuned object will be garbage collected naturally after it is no longer referenced and needed.
• Toggling wall tile placement types is once again possible on controllers.
• Addressed a crash on Xbox with stability improvements.

Gallery Server

• Reported comments should no longer reappear after restarting The Sims 4 client.
• Tweaked settings on the profanity filter checks to address your false positive reports. If you continue to experience issues while sharing to the Gallery please  report it to us through this short survey .

Cats & Dogs

• We've updated the descriptions of a few breeds of cats and dogs.
• Celebrate, everybody! No, really, everybody can celebrate holidays again. Sims who weren’t able to participate in Holiday Events should no longer have this issue.
• Outdoor lovers rejoice, Sims can now fish in cold windy and cloudy windy weather conditions.
• You can now safely use the game setting to “Opt Out of Fame“ without having any impact on NPC Sims spawning in to visit community lots.

Eco Lifestyle

• Fridges using ice that are Off the Grid will no longer drain power.
• Rental Incomes: Additional information has been added on several relevant UI screens to more clearly communicate how Rent for all owned units will be collected by the end of the week along with any taxes or bills due.
• Fixes for Save Error : 403:8e5010b7 – Some combined fixes aim to resolve current saves and prevent this error from happening on future saves. Fixed references to zones in business manager that no longer exist in the game data; which triggered the failure to save exception when attempting to save on what previously was a residential rental lot.
• Nasi Lemak has a more accurate model to represent this delicious dish & the previous visual dish has been added as the new recipe Coconut Rice.
• You should no longer experience situations where you can get stuck on Residential Rental lot types. This includes Error code: 102/122:a0adad34 which should no longer occur on load.
• Tomarang world Map screen will load without Last Exception errors.
• Thi Linh's secret text message should be a bit easier to read now.
• Sims can now successfully complete the “Socialize with Close Sims“ want after interacting with Family and Friends.

Dream Home Decorator

• Sims will no longer be stuck on client's lots after completing a home decorator gig.

Home Chef Hustle

• Sims were just a little over-excited by the prepped ingredients, eating them straight out of the fridge. A lot! Sims will no longer autonomously eat prepped ingredients when eating leftovers.
• It was getting a little too hot in the kitchen! We've tuned the frequency of fires that will start when cooking with the ChowBella Portable Pizza Oven and ChowBella Heart Waffle Maker.
• Plain Waffles are totally vegetarian! Sims will no longer gain the “Violating Principles” moodlet after indulging in some waffley goddess.
• The Market Magnate and Appliance Wiz Aspirations now count towards the Over-Achiever achievement.
• Sims who struggle to make batter, dough, and lactose free batter in the Stand Mixer will now play the appropriate animation.

Goth Galore

• Your eyes didn’t deceive you! The goth hoodie in this Kit will no longer enlarge the eyes of your female Sims while worn. Not to worry; the change in eye size was not permanent. Your Sims’ eyes will return to their normal size with this update.
